Captain Beefheart and Oxford Circle - Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, 1966

In June 17-18, 1966 this big old beef mooed with Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band along with the Oxford Circle played at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. You might say that this poster is full of Bull! It is Family Dog poster lucky number #13 in their original series entitled “Red Bull” (long before the energy drink was around). The central image is of course a drawing of a Big Bull labeled “Choice” on the side of his neck. This is the very first poster for the Family Dog that was entirely done by Stanley Mouse alone and dates from before any collaborating efforts with Alton Kelley to form Mouse Studios. It is also one of the many attempts to match the image with the names of the acts which were performing at the concerts, in this case, Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band.
